12/2004 - 12/2009   Staff Assistant Art Director for BusinessWeek. From 2004 - 2007 I worked primarily on the weekly magazine, and then increasingly on BusinessWeek SmallBiz, the sister publication, published 6 x per year. On BusinessWeek SmallBiz I acted as the second-in-command on a 2-person team, and helped with its re-design in 2007.

5/2004 - 12/2004   Freelance design for BusinessWeek magazine. I worked on front of book and back of book stories and special sections, arriving just after the magazine had had a major redesign.

4/2001 - 5/2004   Freelance design for Sports Illustrated and Fortune magazines.

2/2000 - 4/2001  Staff Deputy Art Director, Fortune Small Business magazine, AOL/Time Warner, NY. In addition to designing stories throughout the magazine and selecting illustrators, I assumed other managerial duties, like reviewing color regularly with the Imaging Department and coordinating production with the Copy Department. In early 2001 FSB increased production from 8 to 10 issues, switched to perfect binding and underwent a redesign. I hired freelance designers when necessary, and also found a full-time junior designer for the company.

6/1993 - 2/2000  Staff Assistant Art Director, Sports Illustrated magazine, AOL/TimeWarner, NY. I designed and art directed features in addition to the front-of-book columns. From late 1995 to early 1998 I designed the Golf Plus section. This section was a popular special subscriber insert. Golf Plus ranged from 10 to 20+ pages of edit coverage per week. While I was the art director of the Golf Plus section I also designed two unique Bonus issues of Golf Plus. The first such issue was published in December 1996 and the second in March 1998. They were mailed to Golf Plus subscribers.

5/1990 - 6/1993   Freelance Designer, Sports Illustrated magazine, Time Warner Direct, Bantam Doubleday Dell, Grey Direct, NY. For most of this period I was a freelancer at Sports Illustrated magazine. At this time the magazine’s art department converted to use of the Mac. I also did production and design for other clients in publishing and direct marketing. I created camera-ready mechanicals, drew marker comps and hand lettering for clients requiring concepts and printed pieces for brochures, direct mail packages and insert cards.

Special Projects:  In 2004 I designed and created the first website for Coral Press, a small publisher. In 1991 I drew the line illustrations for a book about cake decoration. Published in October 1991 by Little, Brown and Co., this book, by Colette Peters, is called Colette’s Cakes and is still published.

4/1986 - 5/1990   Staff Assistant Art Director, Clark Direct Marketing, NY. I produced mechanicals, comps and designs for direct mail and sweepstakes packages, insert cards, and full page and space ads in magazines and newspapers. Accounts included Business Tokyo, CBS Video, First Edition Library, Disney Family Magazine, Book-of-the-Month Club, Rolling Stone, Architectural Digest, Cuisinarts, Staples, Lear’s magazine, Bantam Books, Dell, Gevalia Kaffe, and Chemical Bank. This small agency closed in 1992.

6/1982 - 4/1986    Freelance Production Artist, Time Inc. NY Corporate Circulation. I did direct mail package mechanicals and marker comps for the magazines Time, Life, People, Sports Illustrated, Discover and Fortune. I also did freelance production at New York, Video Review, Electronic Fun, and New Woman magazines.
